Seth David Powell

PhD Candidate
South Asian Religions
Seth Powell is a Ph.D. Candidate in South Asian Religions, with a focus on medieval Sanskrit yoga texts and traditions. He is interested in the relationship between history, text and practice, and how yogic theory informs praxis. He is excited to explore how the emergence of prescriptive pre-modern yoga texts beginning in c. 13th century India illuminate notions of embodiment, sectarian identity, and religious experience — as well as reveal continuities and disruptions with the culture and practice of modern transnational yoga. Seth holds degrees in the study of religion from the University of Washington (M.A.) and Humboldt State University (B.A.).
