PhD Candidate

Steve Rizzo is a PhD Candidate in the subfield of Christianity and Religious Thought (Philosophy and Theology). His research employs the approaches of decolonial theory, philosophy of religion, and political theology. His research interests include Latin American and Caribbean philosophy and theology; co-constructions of race, religion, and politics; legacies of colonialism and coloniality in early modern philosophy and theology; and the contested discourses of “materialism” and “materiality” in the study of religion. His dissertation, tentatively titled “Beside the River Arimao: The Decolonial Religious Thought of Enrique Dussel,” examines Mexican-Argentinian philosopher Enrique Dussel’s attempts to contend with the colonial legacies of “religion” in Latin America and to propose decolonial alternatives through categories such as temporality, materiality, and poiesis. He holds an MDiv from Harvard Divinity School and a BA in English/Philosophy from New College of Florida.
